Far Eastern New Century Corp., Nike's Taiwanese contract manufacturer, houses the high-tech equipment where the water-free dyeing takes place. "ColorDry" is a powerful advancement for the large-scale production of textiles making it easier for a company to control their environmental impact and maintain a respectable reputation for sustainability efforts in the public's eye.
Erik Sprunk, Nike, Inc.'s COO, "[sees] sustainability and business growth as complementary and [Nike's] strategy is to prioritize relationships with factory groups that demonstrate a desire to invest in sustainable practices and technologies. [Nike's] collaboration with Far Eastern and DyeCoo, to develop and scale the ColorDry process, is an important milestone on [their] path towards manufacturing innovation."
DyeCoo Textile Systems B.V. takes credit for the invention which substitutes water for recyclable CO2. Compared to conventional dyeing, this new system saves 100-150 liters of water for every one kg of textiles processed. It also eliminates the additional use of harsh chemicals and conserves more energy. ColorDry "reduces dyeing time by 40%, energy use by around 60% and the required factory footprint by a quarter. It's also the most saturated, intense and consistent color [Far Eastern] has seen," Kuenlin Ho, Executive VP at FENC. So far polyester has been the only material used in conjunction with the new technology, but with additional investors on board (such as IKEA) further testing is underway to broaden ColorDry's application. Can't wait to see what comes next!
