Read more: United Airlines Replaces Styrofoam With Recyclable Coffee Cups |
Last month we added a new category to the existing list of topics we enjoy covering: "green" progress/trends in the healthcare industry, sustainable fashion, organic cotton updates, and now, studies & best practices in environmental management adopted by large corporations operating in a variety of industries. We hope you enjoy reading these updates as much as we enjoy writing about them!
Last week it was announced that United Airlines is replacing their Styrofoam cups with recyclable ones! Passing the need for a sleeve, the insulated cups (named InCycle) are manufactured by MicroGREEN, Inc. technology that converts one recycled plastic water bottle into four and a half InCycle cups. This switch will not only save the company from producing unnecessary waste but will also divert millions of Styrofoam cups from being added to landfills. In a time frame of six years, over 23 million pounds of waste generated on board by United's aircraft has been recycled; however with these new hot beverage containers we can expect to see that number increase substantially for the next six years to follow. Utilizing additional strategies that could be implemented to improve United's waste management and operational recycling efforts is under further review by the company so be on the look-out for these eco-changes during your next "friendly skies" flight!
