U.S. Organic Cotton Sector Highest in 20 yrs.

2014 represents the largest percentage increase in organic cotton acreage planted within the United States (up 14% from 2013) in almost 20 years according to recently published findings by the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

In 2014 growers planted over 18,000 acres of organic cotton seed in spite of tough conditions such as weather, limited seed supply, and a shortfall in manual labor. Additionally, an ongoing challenge organic cotton producers face is finding a safe, chemical-free alternative to eradicating weeds. As Laura Batcha, CEO and Executive Director of OTA states, "It's not easy to grow organic cotton. [However,] These latest numbers show the genuine commitment of organic growers to produce cotton in the most environmentally friendly way, and to respond to an increasing desire by consumers for organic fiber."

Studies show as more and more consumers shift their lifestyles and behaviors to select healthier, more sustainable options, organic incorporation is extending beyond food. Organic cotton sales have increased substantially. In fact, "organic fiber is now the largest non-food organic category in the market, with organic fiber sales in the U.S. closing in on $1 billion in 2013" (OTA). Given that the clothing and textile industry is one of the biggest industries in the world and the second highest environmental pollutant producer after oil, we are relieved to see such promising efforts being made on behalf of organic cotton producers and the end consumer to support and promote healthier and safer livelihoods. At RxOrganics we are proud to be a part of the organic movement and its ever-growing community of advocates. We stand strong by our commitment in using only 100% domestically sourced certified organic cotton (along with other sustainable textiles) for our RxMed and RxKitchen line apparel.

"[This] Organic Trade Association report is based on a survey conducted in December of organic cotton growers in Arizona, California, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Texas. West Texas is the leading organic cotton region in the country." Official OTA Press Release, 02/09/15
