Trend Alert: Putting the 'hospital' in 'hospitality'

The medical spa green room in St. Dominic Hospital - Jackson, Miss.
Throughout the states hospitals are cranking up the swank with lush interior design and incredibly chic amenities.

Architectural inspiration and service offerings are being pulled from elegant hotels to offer the best patient experience possible. Some hospitals have even teamed up with renowned chefs to recreate menu offerings (Wolfgang Puck anyone?) as well as fashion icons (Diane von Furstenberg) for input on the styling of patient attire. Creating an upscale lobby is the bare minimum when it comes to design work. Private rooms have now become the standard in new hospital construction in the United States. However, such improvements come with a very steep price and the makeovers have received much backlash from health economists who challenge the unnecessary and costly marketing tactics. Counter arguments for the movement are of course equally voiced and while the controversy will continue to face much debate we'd like to resume our ogling of the posh facilities in the mean time. Take the fun quiz, Is This a Hospital or a Hotel?, provided by Elisabeth Rosenthal, a reporter for The New York Times.
