IKEA Increases Use of Organic Cotton

http://www.sustainablebrands.com/news_and_views/supply_chain/mike_hower/ikea_ups_use_sustainably_sourced_cotton_72

We are thrilled to learn that Swedish company IKEA has increased its use of sustainably sourced cotton in its products by 72%!

This is a 38% rise from 2012 results. IKEA credits this boost "from its work with the WWF on the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), an independent organization that sets social and environmental criteria for more sustainable cotton production, of which IKEA is a founding member" (Mike Hower, writer, Sustainable Brands). The global chain has invested a stronger focus on gathering its cotton from farmers who are working towards standards of the BCI. In addition to sustainable sourcing methods, IKEA is researching more efficient ways to scale their use of cotton in the production process. So far one project underway involves "[standardizing] the way [IKEA] constructs fabric, which could reduce the amount of cotton IKEA needs for a piece of fabric by up to 15%" (Hower). It is with hope that more big brands will follow in IKEA's footsteps and start making similar shifts towards improving their environmental impact.
