Bay Area's Levi's Stadium 1st to Receive LEED Gold Certification

"The San Francisco 49ers new Levi's Stadium...is being billed as a possible turning point in the country's approach to sustainability."
-Climate Action
It is so exciting to see a green economy advancing right here in our own backyard. The new Levi's Stadium, which opened in Santa Clara on August 1st, is getting a lot of attention - and for good reason! The sports venue (home to the San Francisco 49ers football team) has received Gold level certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Not only is this terrific news because of the pure achievement of such a difficult and high standard, but the facility is the first NFL venue in the United States to receive the certification. Some key features include a 27,000-square-foot green roof with native plants, energy efficiency from a 1,000 solar applications plus a 400kW photovoltaic installation, and impressive water savings (it uses 50% less water and 85% of overall water consumed is recycled). In addition, recycled and reclaimed building materials were implemented throughout the sustainable site's development whenever possible.

As stated by the president, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council, Rick Fedrizzi, "Levi's Stadium's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership. The urgency of USGBC's mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Levi's Stadium serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish."

Furthermore, "the stadium...was designed to achieve net zero energy performance, enabling the 10 home games that the San Francisco 49ers play per season to be completely powered by clean energy sources."

Now this is what we call a home improvement! Go Niners!
